Managed as part of the federal West Coast groundfish complex (PFMC/NOAA Fisheries) and by CDFW, ODFW and WDFW in state waters, with ADF&G in Alaska. Recreational bag limits are commonly set as a combined vermilion/sunset rockfish sub-limit within an overall rockfish aggregate bag limit, specifically because the two species are difficult to tell apart in the field. Depth-based seasonal closures (Rockfish/Groundfish Conservation Areas), management-area boundaries, and sub-bag limits are reset at least annually and can change in-season. California requires anglers targeting federal groundfish to carry a descending device aboard. Verify the current-year rules for the specific state and management area before fishing.

- Sunset rockfish (undescribed cryptic sister species)
- A 2015-era peer-reviewed genetic study found significant differences in depth, latitude, and size distribution between vermilion and sunset rockfish in the Southern California Bight, but also found that 20-30% of fish carrying a vermilion mitochondrial haplotype are classified as sunset rockfish by nuclear genotype — meaning even genetic assignment is not always clean, and the two are not reliably told apart by eye. Treat any 'vermilion' catch in the Southern California Bight as potentially including sunset rockfish.
