Native western Atlantic migratory fish ranging Nova Scotia to Argentina, with the United States population centred on Florida and the Gulf and seasonally present as far north as the Carolinas and Virginia. Slow-maturing and long-lived: SCDNR gives maturity at about age 10 and lifespans around 50 years with individuals potentially reaching 70, and FWC gives lifespans in excess of 50 years with a captive fish reaching 63. There is no regional stock assessment and no fishery management plan for the species, and SCDNR records its population status as unknown.

Where this applies Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Texas and the other Gulf and South Atlantic states each regulate tarpon separately, and the rules are not variations on a theme; they range from catch-and-release only to a tag-and-minimum-size harvest.

Tarpon are catch-and-release only in Florida. FWC allows no harvest under standard recreational rules, permits one tarpon tag per person per year and only in pursuit of a Florida state or world record, and requires that any tarpon over 40 in remain in the water unless a tag is being used. Alabama prohibits possession of any tarpon under 60 in and requires a purchased tag attached through the lower jaw immediately on harvest. South Carolina declared tarpon a game fish in 1991, banning sale and setting a one-fish daily possession limit. Beyond the harvest rules, gear is restricted: FWC allows hook and line only and prohibits snagging, snatch hooking, spearing and multiple hooks used with live or dead natural bait. SCDNR records the species as having no regional stock assessment, no fishery management plan and unknown population status, and lists catch-and-release fishing mortality among its threats.
