Managed by ASMFC alone via an interstate FMP dating to 1985; no federal fishery management council role was found in the sources reviewed, unlike summer flounder and bluefish, which are jointly managed with MAFMC. The stock has been considered depleted since 2003 and remains so: the most recent full assessment (2019) put 2017 spawning stock biomass at about 1,922 mt against a threshold of 6,170 mt, and natural mortality has run far higher over the last decade (about 0.92) than in the fishery's early years (about 0.16) for reasons not fully understood, which has kept the stock from rebuilding even under low harvest. Current coastwide measures are correspondingly restrictive: a 1-fish recreational bag limit in most jurisdictions and a 100-lb commercial bycatch cap.
