Western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico native, ranging from the Gulf of Maine (Bay of Fundy in one account) to Florida and south to Argentina. The largest member of the drum family (Sciaenidae) and one of the longest-lived inshore fish an angler will encounter - the generic name means 'bearded' and the specific name means 'to grunt'.

Telling it apart

Identification

Silvery with a brassy lustre in life, darkening toward grey after death. Larger fish are often dark grey to nearly black. Juveniles are silvery-grey to dark with bold black vertical bars.

What to look at

  • Chin barbels - 10 to 13 pairs of small barbels along the lower jaw, plus five chin pores. These are the definitive character and they are acquired early, at about 15 mm total length.
  • Subinferior mouth set well back under the snout, consistent with bottom rooting.
  • Heavily paved pharyngeal teeth in the throat for crushing shell. Not visible externally but definitive on a dead fish.
  • Juveniles carry four to six black vertical bars that fade with age; large adults are effectively unbarred.
  • Fin counts reported as 11 dorsal spines with 19-22 dorsal soft rays, and 2 anal spines with 5-7 anal soft rays.
  • No spot at the base of the tail - the character that separates it from red drum.
  • Produces audible drumming; both sexes have drumming muscles, with females drumming in a softer tone than males.
Average adult length
Maturity is reported at ages 2-4 for males and 4-6 for females, with a Gulf extension source giving 24-26 in at 4-5 years, and a state account noting all fish older than six years were sexually mature. Ages 1 and 2 dominate estuarine samples.

Sheepshead
Sheepshead carry five or six vertical bars like a juvenile black drum, but have no chin barbels, have prominent incisor teeth at the front of the jaw, and reach far smaller sizes. Check under the jaw: barbels means black drum.
Red drum
Red drum have no chin barbels and carry at least one black ocellated spot at the base of the tail. Black drum have barbels and no caudal spot. Small individuals of both are found on the same bottom.
