Yellow eels are bottom-oriented and largely solitary. ASMFC describes them as substrate-oriented with minimal movement during daylight. Local density matters biologically — it determines the sex ratio of the eels that eventually mature there — but it is not a social structure.
USFWS describes yellow eels as opportunistic carnivores with, in its words, enormous dietary breadth, taking whatever is available at a size they can handle. ASMFC adds plant material and carrion, and documents cannibalism on smaller eels. Feeding is bottom-referenced rather than water-column.
ASMFC: yellow eels are primarily nocturnal with peak feeding activity at nightfall, though some daytime movement occurs, and lunar phase influences activity — movement is reduced around the full moon, interpreted as an anti-predation response. USFWS: upstream movement occurs from dusk to dawn, and estuary outmigration is primarily at night.

- Rayed fins, covered gill slits and jaws with many small teeth — the separation from lampreys, which have a jawless sucking disc, open gill holes and no fin rays (CRITFC).

- Highly variable by sex and latitude. USFWS: males typically mature near 350–400 mm (14–16 in); females range from 450–600 mm in the southeastern US to over a metre in northern Canadian waters.

- Maryland DNR gives a size span from about 2 in for glass eels to over 3 ft for large females. Yellow eels encountered in fresh water are generally well under a metre, with sex- and latitude-driven variation dominating.
