What to look at
- Deeply forked tail, shared with channel catfish and not with flathead or bullheads.
- Indiana DNR / North Carolina Wildlife / Texas Parks and Wildlife: anal fin straight-edged (not rounded), 30–36 rays, relatively long base, tapering like a barber’s comb or razor. Channel catfish have a convex anal fin of 24–29 rays.
- Body without dark spots. Texas Parks and Wildlife: only the Rio Grande population has dark spots on the back and sides. Do not use spots as a universal blue-catfish mark.
- Slate blue on the back, shading to white on the belly (Texas Parks and Wildlife / North Carolina Wildlife). NOAA Fisheries: four pairs of barbels around the mouth.
- USGS NAS / Virginia DWR: native to the Mississippi–Missouri–Ohio and Gulf drainages. Chesapeake and many Atlantic-slope populations are introduced; Virginia DWR and NOAA treat Chesapeake tributary populations as invasive. Status is jurisdiction-specific and is not a targeting endorsement.

- Flathead catfish
- Flathead have a flattened head, a projecting lower jaw, a square to slightly notched tail, and 14–17 anal rays. Blue catfish are forked-tailed Ictalurus with an overbite.
- White catfish
- Virginia DWR: white catfish have a more emarginate (less forked) caudal fin, a rounded anal fin, a bulbous head, and in Virginia typically do not exceed 15 in. They are an Ameiurus, not a large-river blue catfish.
