Identification
What to look at
- Missouri DNR / Texas Parks and Wildlife: deeply forked tail — the split from bullheads and from flathead, which have a square or only slightly notched tail.
- Missouri DNR / Indiana DNR / North Carolina Wildlife: outer margin of the anal fin rounded outward (convex), usually 24–29 rays, with a relatively shorter anal-fin base than blue catfish.
- Scattered dark spots on the back and sides. Missouri DNR: spots are often absent in the smallest young and in large adults. Spots are not a blue-catfish mark.
- Texas Parks and Wildlife: upper jaw projects beyond the lower jaw. Flathead have the reverse — a projecting lower jaw.
- Olive-brown to slate-blue back and sides, silvery-white belly. Breeding males may darken and show a swollen, knobby head (Missouri DNR). Color is not the species key by itself.

- Missouri DNR: commonly 12–32 in. Minnesota DNR: stream fish often much smaller than lake-stocked fish.

- Blue catfish
- Blue catfish also have a deeply forked tail but a straight-edged anal fin with 30 or more rays, a longer anal-fin base, a more wedge-shaped nape, and (except the Rio Grande population noted by Texas Parks and Wildlife) no dark spots. Channel catfish have a convex anal fin of 24–29 rays and usually carry spots until large.
- Flathead catfish
- Flathead have a broad flattened head, a projecting lower jaw, a square to slightly notched tail, and 14–17 anal rays. Channel catfish have a forked tail and an overbite.
- White catfish
- White catfish are an Ameiurus: moderately forked tail with rounded lobes, a wider head and mouth, 18–24 anal rays, and light chin barbels. Channel catfish are more slender, more deeply forked, and usually spotted when young.
- Brown bullhead
- Bullheads have a square to slightly notched tail, not a deep fork. Channel catfish are not pond bullheads.
