Identification

Brassy to olive-brown back and sides, yellow to cream belly. Wild fish are fully scaled; mirror and leather variants occur in some fisheries.

What to look at

  • Two barbels on each side of the upper jaw (four barbels total) — absent in buffalo.
  • Long dorsal fin with a stout, serrated leading spine; anal fin also with a serrated spine.
  • Large scales; mouth is inferior/subterminal but not a true sucker mouth.
  • USGS NAS treats this as an introduced Eurasian species, not a native buffalo.
