Telling it apart

Identification

Olive green to silver with interrupted rows of dark spots and a black teardrop under the eye. Young fish may show an orange-ringed dorsal spot that adults lose.

What to look at

  • South Carolina DNR: a distinct, large black teardrop-shaped marking below the eye. Florida Museum: a large black teardrop.
  • South Carolina DNR: the most dorsal-fin spines of any sunfish, usually 11–13. Georgia DNR: long anal fin with 7–8 anal spines. Crappie have 5–8 dorsal spines and three anal spines — not this count.
  • South Carolina DNR / Florida Museum: interrupted rows of black spots along the side. Georgia DNR: scales marked with a brown spot forming a series of horizontal lines.
  • Young fliers have a dark spot outlined in an orange ring on the dorsal fin; these spots fade and disappear with age (South Carolina DNR). Do not use the juvenile dorsal spot as an adult key.
  • Operculum lobe is black (South Carolina DNR). The body is olive green to silver, not a Lepomis ear-flap sunfish and not a Pomoxis speckle pattern.

Bluegill have a small mouth, a dark ear flap, a soft-dorsal spot, and three anal spines. Fliers are almost circular, carry a teardrop, and have 11–13 dorsal spines.
Warmouth
Warmouth are thick, large-mouthed, and mottled, with tongue teeth and three anal spines. Fliers are round, teardrop-marked, and high-spined.
