Atlantic sharpnose is the most permissive of the four species in this batch: both NOAA's federal rule and FWC's Group 1 state-waters rule set no minimum size. The two regimes still diverge on bag-limit accounting — NOAA's federal rule is 1 shark per person per trip, while FWC's shore-based rule is 1 shark per person per day with a 2-shark-per-vessel cap — and on permitting: a vessel angler in federal waters needs an HMS Angling/Charterboat permit plus shark endorsement, while a shore-based angler in Florida state waters needs FWC's separate no-cost Shore-Based Shark Fishing permit and course instead. Both regimes require non-offset, non-stainless circle hooks with natural bait. Because this species schools with, and at small sizes can be visually confused with, juvenile blacktip, spinner, and other small coastal sharks, misidentifying a juvenile prohibited species (e.g., a young dusky or sandbar shark) as sharpnose remains a real risk even though sharpnose itself carries the lightest rule set of the four.
