Telling it apart

Identification

Bluish-green to olive back, silvery sides and belly, sides marked with scattered gold-to-bronze spots.

What to look at

  • Sides carry numerous irregular golden-yellow to bronze spots with no connecting streaks or lines.
  • Front of the first dorsal fin is marked with a bluish-black blotch — the clearest single field mark separating it from king mackerel, which lacks this blotch.
  • Lateral line slopes gradually to the tail, unlike king mackerel's abrupt downward dip under the second dorsal fin.
  • First dorsal fin has 17-19 spines.

Commonly around 15 in as landed; adults reach at least about 28 in (70 cm) fork length.

King mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla)
King mackerel lack the black dorsal-fin blotch and gold spotting typical of adult Spanish mackerel, run considerably larger, and show an abrupt downward dip in the lateral line under the second dorsal fin.
Cero mackerel (Scomberomorus regalis)
Cero mackerel show a horizontal row of yellow-orange streaks along the midline mixed with spots above and below, rather than the spots-only, no-streaks pattern of Spanish mackerel.
