Olive to brassy sides with orange or gold spotting, a colorful cheek, and a red-orange ear-flap spot on a pale margin.

  • Wavy blue and orange lines on the cheek and gill cover. Redear lack that cheek maze.

  • Small mouth; upper jaw does not reach past the eye. Pectorals are long, as in bluegill, not the rounded green-sunfish pectoral.
  • Three anal spines, as in other Lepomis. Rock bass have six.

Redear have a red or orange edge on the flap, not a discrete spot with a white margin, and they lack pumpkinseed’s wavy blue cheek lines. Redear are the snail specialist.
Green sunfish
Green sunfish have a large mouth and an elongated body. Pumpkinseed mouths are small.
Longear sunfish
Longear have a much longer opercular flap, often white-edged. Pumpkinseed’s flap is short, with a discrete red-orange spot and a white margin.
