Identification
What to look at
- Michigan DNR: two broadly joined dorsal fins; small mouth; long pointed pectoral fins; a faint black spot toward the rear of the soft dorsal that other sunfish lack.
- Dark opercular (ear) flap without a red or orange spot. Pumpkinseed and redear carry color on that flap; bluegill’s flap is black.
- Five to nine faint vertical bars on the sides. Breeding males show blue on the gill cover and an orange to copper breast — color is not the species key by itself.
- Upper jaw does not reach past the front of the eye. Green sunfish and warmouth mouths are much larger.
- Michigan DNR notes hybridization with pumpkinseed and green sunfish. Hybrids should not be forced into this record.

- Commonly 6–9 in; crowded ponds stunt well below that.
- Common angling size
- 6–8 in in most warm still waters.
- Typical weight
- Often 4–8 oz; a 1 lb fish is a large inland bluegill.

- Pumpkinseed
- Pumpkinseed have a bright red or orange spot on a white-margined ear flap and wavy blue lines on the cheek. Bluegill have a plain black flap and a soft-dorsal spot.
- Redear sunfish
- Redear have a red or orange edge on the ear flap and lack the bluegill soft-dorsal spot. They are more slab-sided and bottom-oriented.
- Green sunfish
- Green sunfish have a large mouth, a more elongated bass-like body, rounded pectorals, and often a dark spot at the dorsal base with pale fin margins. Bluegill mouths are small.
- Crappie
- Crappie have a much larger mouth and Pomoxis speckling or bars, not a Lepomis ear flap or a round bluegill body.
