Telling it apart

Identification

Grey to slate or olive-grey over the back and upper sides, shading to a clean white or pale grey belly. Fisheries and Oceans Canada describes whitish lateral lines and a clean white belly, in contrast to the green sturgeon's yellowish sharp-tipped scutes and dark olive ventral stripe.

What to look at

  • Barbels sit closer to the tip of the snout than to the mouth. This is the primary separation from green sturgeon, whose barbels sit midway between mouth and snout tip or nearer the mouth (Fisheries and Oceans Canada).
  • Five rows of bony scutes. Fisheries and Oceans Canada gives 11-14 in the dorsal row, 38-48 in the lateral row and 4-8 in the ventral rows; Montana's account gives 11-14 dorsal, 36-48 lateral and 9-12 ventral. The ventral counts disagree between those two sources, so treat the lateral row (high thirties to high forties) as the workable count.
  • No scutes behind the dorsal fin. Green sturgeon carries 1-2 there (Oregon Sea Grant).
  • Vent sits near the tail rather than between the pelvic fins (Oregon Sea Grant).
  • Three to four small pairs of pre-anal plates and one to two post-anal plates (Fisheries and Oceans Canada).
  • Body is scaleless apart from the scute rows; mouth is toothless and works by suction.
Average adult length
Population-dependent. Washington's account gives fish growing to more than 10 ft; Oregon Sea Grant notes modern fish rarely exceed about 6 ft. In the lower Columbia the Oregon plan puts male maturity near 54 in fork length and female maturity near 65 in fork length. Montana's landlocked account gives fish to about 6 ft.
Common angling size
Set by regulation rather than by biology, and it differs by water. Where retention is allowed at all it is typically inside a fork-length slot with oversize fish released - the Oregon conservation plan describes a 38-54 in fork-length sport slot for the period it covers, with a one-fish daily and five-fish annual limit, and a catch-and-release fishery on oversize fish above that slot. Washington reports no recreational retention in several coastal and Puget Sound waters and catch-and-release only in selected rivers. Any size expectation must come from the current local rule set, not from this record.
Typical weight

What it gets confused with

Green sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris)
The only sturgeon congener sharing Pacific drainages with white sturgeon. Barbels are midway between the mouth and the snout tip, or closer to the mouth, where white sturgeon's sit closer to the snout tip. Scute counts are much lower: 8-11 dorsal, 23-30 lateral, 1-4 ventral, against white sturgeon's 11-14, 38-48, 4-8. Green sturgeon also carries 1-2 scutes behind the dorsal fin, which white sturgeon lacks, and has olive-green colour with yellowish, sharp-tipped scutes rather than grey with a clean white belly.
Lake sturgeon
A separate catalog record and a separate set of drainages - lake sturgeon is a Great Lakes, Mississippi and St. Lawrence species, white sturgeon a Pacific-drainage species.
