Telling it apart

Identification

Golden-brown to olive back and sides, creamy or yellow belly. Spotting is coarser than a rainbow and includes the red haloed spots that give the species its field look.

What to look at

  • Caudal fin is largely unspotted — a plain tail — unlike rainbow and cutthroat, whose tails carry black spots.
  • Sides show a mix of dark spots and red-to-orange spots, the red spots commonly ringed by pale halos.
  • Dark spots typically mark the operculum / gill cover.
  • Adipose and anal fins are often orange or yellow-tinted; there is no pink lateral stripe.
  • Maxillary commonly reaches past the eye in adults.
