- Minnesota DNR: this catalog record is the black/white crappie complex, not a subspecies key. Black crappie are generally darker with seven or eight dorsal spines; white crappie often show vertical bars and usually have five or six dorsal spines.
- Mouth is large relative to Lepomis sunfish — the upper jaw reaches well under the eye. Bluegill and pumpkinseed mouths are small.
- Irregular dark speckling (black crappie) or faint vertical bars (white crappie) on a silvery-green to olive ground. Not the even sunfish bar recipe of bluegill.
- Dorsal fin is long, with the spinous and soft portions connected. Spines are the in-complex split, not a sunfish-versus-crappie key.
- Catalog exception: black and white habitat splits in the same lake. Do not force a fish into a species that is not a separate catalog record.

- Commonly 8–12 in. Minnesota DNR: the two species are similar in size.

- Bluegill have a small mouth, a dark ear flap, a soft-dorsal spot, and even vertical bars. Crappie have a much larger mouth and the Pomoxis speckle/bar language, not a Lepomis ear flap.
- White bass
- White bass are temperate bass with continuous horizontal stripes and a deeper, more predatory body. They are not speckled Pomoxis.
- Yellow perch
- Yellow perch have about seven regular blackish bars, two clearly separated dorsal fins, and no canine-free crappie mouth. They are percids, not centrarchids.
- Flier
- Fliers are almost circular, carry a black teardrop under the eye, and have 11–13 dorsal spines — more than either crappie. They are a coastal-plain swamp sunfish, not this Pomoxis complex.
