Telling it apart

Identification

Golden brown to olive with a white to silver belly and rows of dark spots. Color can shift quickly toward the background.

What to look at

  • Michigan DNR: six spines on the anal fin, as opposed to other sunfish which only have three. Iowa DNR: six anal spines and about 12 dorsal spines distinguish this fish from other sunfish.
  • Michigan DNR: red eyes. The eye color is a supporting mark, not the only key.
  • Large mouth. Rows of dark spots or mottling on golden-brown to olive sides, not Lepomis vertical bars and not smallmouth bronze bars.
  • Michigan DNR: an uncanny ability to change color to match surroundings. Color is therefore a poor single key.
  • Not Micropterus: the body is deeper, the anal-spine count is six, and the eye is red. Smallmouth mouths stop at the eye and show vertical bronze bars.

Green sunfish
Green sunfish have three anal spines and Lepomis fin language. Rock bass have six anal spines and red eyes.
Warmouth
Warmouth share the goggle-eye nickname and a large mouth, but have three anal spines and teeth on the tongue. Rock bass have six anal spines and lack that tongue-tooth key.
