- Chain pickerel have a chain pattern, a dark bar down from the eye, and a fully scaled cheek and opercle. They are much smaller eastern fish. North Carolina Wildlife: muskellunge lack that suborbital bar.
- Tiger muskellunge (northern pike × muskellunge hybrid)
- Tiger muskies show intermediate bars, scaling, and pores. Treat as a hybrid. Do not force either parent.
