Telling it apart

Identification

Darker, more brassy-brown than a typical walleye, with obvious saddle blotches and a spotted first dorsal. Belly paler.

What to look at

  • Missouri DNR: distinct dark blotches or saddle marks on the sides — the primary body split from walleye.
  • Minnesota DNR / Missouri DNR: first dorsal marked by rows of dark spots and lacking the dark blotch at the rear base that walleye show.
  • Lower caudal lobe lacks a white blotch, or the blotch is reduced (Minnesota DNR; Missouri DNR).
  • Missouri DNR: scales present on the cheek; hind edge of the preopercle strongly saw-toothed.
  • Generally smaller than sympatric walleye. Size supports the ID; it is not the key by itself.
