Behaviour

The sources reviewed describe sheefish as migratory and locally abundant during runs but do not describe a defined school or a defended lie. 'loose_aggregation' is the closest supported reading; treat it as weakly evidenced and see the gap list.

Adults are generalist piscivores. Alaska says adults feed almost exclusively on other fish — herring, smelt and juvenile outmigrants depending on season and location — and an account of one northwestern Alaskan stock adds lamprey and juvenile salmon and sheefish, so cannibalism is on the menu. Yukon River work describes them as generalist piscivores taking a wide variety of smaller fish including their own young, and pelagic invertebrates to a much lesser extent. Juveniles start on plankton and benthic invertebrates.

Recorded as a non-claim. No source reviewed resolves a diel activity pattern for sheefish, and much of the range is under continuous summer daylight. 'mixed' is entered because the field is required; the gap is listed.

Seasonal activityForm-specific and the difference is large. Estuarine-anadromous stocks overwinter in brackish bays, coastal waters and lower river, then move upstream through the summer — fish of one northwestern Alaskan stock migrate gradually from June through August. Freshwater-resident stocks (a large Canadian lake population, and stocks Alaska calls 'residents') never enter brackish water at all. Yukon River work adds a third pattern, partial anadromy, in which fish use the estuary early in life and then stay in fresh water. Spring feeding migrations into tributaries occur in late May through June. Post-spawn fish descend fast — 72.5 km/day on the Yukon against 22.5 km/day going up.

Temperature-driven behaviourCold water throughout. Spawning occurs at 0.5–5.5°C (40°F or colder). Fisheries and Oceans Canada places inconnu in cold water shallower than 40 m and preferentially under 30 m. The catalog's 45–58°F band is a feeding-season band, well above the spawning temperatures.

Depth movementFisheries and Oceans Canada gives a depth envelope of less than 40 m and preferentially less than 30 m. Finer depth structure was not found in the sources reviewed.

ClarityAlaska notes sheefish favour glacial, silt-laden rivers, and that spawning occurs in both clear and silty tributaries — heavy glacial turbidity is normal habitat for this species rather than a disturbance.

Open waterOverwintering is in estuary and coastal water for anadromous stocks, where Yukon River work notes food resources are more available than in upstream fresh water. Freshwater-resident stocks overwinter in large lakes.

Spawning (conservation context)Fall spawner, late September to early October, in cold shallow water over gravel. Fecundity is high — a 50 lb female carries nearly 400,000 eggs. Telling it apart

Identification

Silvery overall, darker along the back, with dark-tipped fins and a purple sheen visible on a fresh fish.

What to look at

  • Strong, projecting lower jaw that extends beyond the upper jaw. Every other Alaskan whitefish has either a small inferior (bottom-facing) mouth or a small terminal one.
  • Largest species in the whitefish subfamily — an adult sheefish is not size-confusable with a cisco or a round whitefish.
  • Small, densely packed teeth in the jaws.
  • Large scales and an overall silvery body; Alaska's notebook describes a phosphorescent purple sheen on a fish just taken from the water.
  • Fins are dark-tipped (Fisheries and Oceans Canada), and the caudal fin is forked.
Average adult length
Fisheries and Oceans Canada gives a typical range of 450–760 mm (18–30 in), occasionally to 1.1 m. Alaskan stocks in the northwest exceed 1 m; interior Alaskan fish run smaller.
Common angling size
Stock-dependent. Alaska's notebook contrasts northwestern fish reaching 60 lb with interior fish that typically stay under 25 lb.
Typical weight
Interior Alaskan fish typically under 25 lb; northwestern Alaskan fish commonly much heavier, to about 60 lb at the extreme. Canadian fish of 450–760 mm are correspondingly lighter.
Maximum documented
Up to 27 kg (about 60 lb) and over 1 m in northwestern Alaska; the sport record from that region was 24 kg (53 lb).
Longevity
Fisheries and Oceans Canada gives up to 21 years in some regions; Alaska reports northwestern fish exceeding 20 years; otolith work on Yukon River fish gives longevity beyond 40 years. Maturity is late — ages 5–9 for males and 7–12 for females in one Alaskan stock, ages 7–10 in Canada, 5–12 across the Yukon River.

What it gets confused with

Humpback whitefish and broad whitefish (Coregonus spp.)
Both have a small inferior, bottom-facing mouth under a short blunt snout, built for picking clams, snails and insect larvae off the bottom. Sheefish has a large mouth with the lower jaw projecting beyond the upper. Broad and humpback whitefish also top out far smaller.
Round whitefish (Prosopium cylindraceum)
Round whitefish has a tiny pointed snout and an inferior mouth, and seldom exceeds 16 in. No projecting lower jaw.
Least cisco (Coregonus sardinella)
Least cisco does have a superior mouth with the lower jaw projecting, so the jaw character alone is not enough. Size settles it: least cisco reaches about 14 in in lakes and 19 in and 4.5 lb at the extreme, against a sheefish that exceeds a metre. The cisco is also slender and herring-like rather than deep-bodied.
Bering cisco and Arctic cisco (Coregonus laurettae, C. autumnalis)
Both have a terminal mouth — jaws even — rather than a projecting lower jaw, are silvery with white pectoral and pelvic fins, and reach only about 14–17 in.
