- Basibranchial (hyoid) teeth at the tongue base are usually absent; maxillary typically does not extend far past the eye in the way many cutthroat do.

- Steelhead

- Brown trout
- Browns have a plain, unspotted tail, orange/yellow adipose and anal-fin highlights, and red-orange spots with pale halos on the sides rather than a pink lateral band.
- Brook trout
- Brook trout are char: worm-like vermiculations on the back, red spots with blue halos, a square tail, and white-then-black leading edges on the lower fins. Rainbows have a spotted tail, a pink lateral band, and lack those vermiculations.
