- Pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins with a white leading edge, then a black streak, then orange or red — a char fin recipe, not a trout stripe.
- Caudal fin square to barely notched, not the deep fork of lake trout.
- Maxillary typically extends past the eye.

- Wild stream adults commonly 6–12 in; pond and lake fish 10–16 in.
- Common angling size
- 7–12 in in most small-stream fisheries.
