- Cheek is deeper than long. Hickory shad's cheek is about as deep as wide (NC identification key, NC Wildlife Resources Commission).
- 59–76 crowded gill rakers on the lower limb of the first gill arch. Hickory shad has only 18–23, widely spaced (NC identification key). Massachusetts gives 59–75, more than any other herring in state waters.
- Adult jaw teeth are minute or absent; hickory shad has jaw teeth present (NC identification key).
- A dark spot behind the gill cover, usually followed by a row of fainter spots along the side that fades toward the tail (NC Wildlife Resources Commission, Northwest Power and Conservation Council).

- Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus)
- River herring are much smaller than adult American shad and differ in the shape of the upper margin of the lower jaw inside the mouth, in peritoneum colour and in dorsal pigmentation. Alewife is separated from blueback herring by eye diameter exceeding the distance from the front of the eye to the tip of the snout (NC identification key, Virginia DWR).
