What to look at
- The mouth is small, toothless or weakly toothed, and set underneath the snout — the snout overhangs the mouth. A trout's mouth is terminal and carries obvious teeth.
- Scales are large and individually countable — 74–90 along the lateral line — where a trout's are fine and hard to count.
- The body carries no spots at all, and the adipose fin is unspotted. Any spotting on the fish means it is not a mountain whitefish.
- Dorsal fin is short, with 12–13 rays; anal fin 11–13 rays; pelvic fins 10–12 rays with an axillary process.
- Gill rakers are short, 19–26 in number.
- Juveniles carry a single row of roughly 7–11 large, discrete, dark oval parr marks along the side.
- Breeding males develop tubercles on the head and body and a pronounced snout; females carry smaller tubercles.
- Average adult length
- Commonly 9–16 in. Alpine-lake fish reach about 11 cm in the first year and roughly 20 cm by year five; fish of 25–50 cm are typically 5–10 years old.

- Grayling carries an outsized sail-like dorsal fin marked with iridescent coloured spots and has a terminal mouth. Mountain whitefish has a short 12–13 ray dorsal, no dorsal-fin markings, and a mouth under the snout.
- Longnose sucker and other suckers
- Suckers are also bottom-oriented with a ventral mouth, but they have thick fleshy sucking lips and no adipose fin. Mountain whitefish has a small firm mouth and a distinct adipose fin.
- Round whitefish (Prosopium cylindraceum)
- The other Prosopium shares the cigar-shaped body, tiny pointed snout, and single nasal flap. Separating the two is a matter of meristics and range, not field colour; do not force one record onto the other on appearance alone.
