Telling it apart

Identification

Mottled tan to dark brown with gold on the belly and streaks through the eye. Color is a supporting mark; spines and tongue teeth are the key.

What to look at

  • Texas Parks and Wildlife: three anal spines, 10 dorsal spines, and small teeth present on the tongue. Rock bass have six anal spines and lack that tongue-tooth key.
  • Florida Museum: upper jaw extends beyond the pupil of the eye. Three to five reddish-brown streaks radiate from the eyes (Texas Parks and Wildlife). FWC: three or four dark stripes radiating back from the eye across the cheek and gill cover.
  • Adults dark and mottled brown; belly generally golden; gill flaps often red (Texas Parks and Wildlife). FWC: red eye and large mouth are conspicuous field marks.
