Identification

Non-spawning fish are silver with a dark blue or green-blue back and small speckling at most. They lack the large spots of trout and most other Pacific salmon.

  • NOAA: kokanee rarely exceed 1.2 ft in length, far smaller than sea-run sockeye.

Rainbow trout
Rainbows are spotted on the body and tail and have fewer anal rays. Kokanee lack those large spots.
Cisco
Cisco are coregonines with larger scales, no salmon-red spawning dress, and a terminal mouth without a salmon kype.
